Lot 612: A Trio of Vintage Folding Hand Fans Including a Chinese Export Style Thousand Faces Fan
A collection of three vintage folding hand fans of varied construction and style. The first is a Chinese export style folding fan with a paper or fabric leaf featuring a Thousand Faces or Hundred Figures design, depicting numerous figures in traditional dress within an architectural and landscape setting. The sticks and guards are made of a dark material, likely black lacquered wood, with gilded and polychrome floral decorations. The second item is a pierced brisé style folding fan made from a bone-coloured composite material, possibly celluloid. The sticks feature intricate pierced scrollwork and star motifs, held together at the pivot by a metal pin with an attached red silk decorative tassel. The third item is a feather folding fan, consisting of black ostrich-style feathers mounted on cream-coloured polished composite or bone sticks. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible.
