Lot 534: An Assortment of Chinese Hand-Painted Silk Paddle Fans and Artist's Materials
An assortment of items comprising a pair of late Qing Dynasty or early Republic period hand-painted silk paddle fans and a selection of contemporary artist’s materials. The fans are of rectangular form with rounded corners, featuring silk panels mounted on frames with gnarled, naturalistic wooden or bamboo handles. Each fan is finished with a multi-coloured silk cord binding incorporating red, yellow, blue, and green threads. One fan is decorated in polychrome pigments with floral sprays of pink blossoms and green foliage. The second fan depicts a red fish and a blue fish swimming amongst aquatic flora. The artist’s materials include two tubes of Winsor & Newton watercolour paint and a single blue pastel stick. One tube is marked WINSOR & NEWTON Cotman Water Colour Prussian Blue 8ml. The second tube is marked WINSOR & NEWTON ARTISTS’ WATER COLOUR Chinese White. The blue artist’s pastel stick retains a partially legible paper wrapper.
