Buyer's Premium:

This lot contains two distinct examples of Asian lacquerware. The first is a large, circular lidded box of black lacquer over a wooden base. The lid features a hand-painted naturalist composition depicting a bird on a flowering branch between two stylized chrysanthemum blossoms in shades of orange, yellow, and blue. This style is characteristic of mid-20th-century East Asian decorative export arts. The second item is a Burmese yun lacquerware set from Myanmar, consisting of a cylindrical lidded box and a collection of circular coasters. These items are decorated with traditional yun incised patterns, featuring a central elephant motif—an animal of significant religious and cultural importance in Southeast Asian Buddhism—surrounded by concentric geometric borders. The colour palette uses teal and dark blue over a black ground. The set is likely constructed of lacquer over a flexible base of woven bamboo or horsehair. No maker marks are visible. A small auction house sticker is affixed to the interior rim of the floral box.
