Lot 499: A mid-20th century Chinese-style blue floral brocade and yellow panelled jacket
This trio of mid-20th century Chinoiserie lounging garments includes two smoking jackets and a coordinating blouse, produced for the London retailer Debenham and Freebody. The blue smoking jacket is made from a slate-blue satin-mix fabric with yellow and pink floral embroidery of chrysanthemums and stylized black seal motifs. It features a quilted shawl collar, quilted cuffs, and patch pockets with quilted trim, secured by fabric-knotted frog closures. The interior is lined with a turquoise floral jacquard fabric. The burgundy smoking jacket is constructed from a maroon satin-mix with tonal floral jacquard-woven patterns and quilted trim to the lapels and pockets. The coordinating turquoise blouse is made of floral jacquard fabric with a mandarin collar, frog closures, and embroidered floral sprays. A wooden hanger accompanying the lot is marked Freebody Made in England.
