Lot 154: Late Victorian Novelty Silver and Ebonised Wood Baby's Rattle and Whistle in the Form of a Cat
An antique novelty baby’s rattle, teether, and whistle, designed in the late Victorian style. The rattle features a cast silver figure of a seated cat resting upon a decorative fringed cushion or base. A functional whistle extends from the top of the cat’s head. Two small silver loops are positioned on either side of the cushion base, which would have originally held hanging bells. The rattle is fitted with a baluster-turned ebonised wood teething handle, terminating in a small silver suspension ring. The cat figure and cushion base are cast and chased with decorative fur and textile details, and the handle is lathe-turned. No maker’s marks, hallmarks, or assay stamps are visible on the metal components.
