Lot 78: Early 20th Century Tortoiseshell and Sterling Silver Good Luck Swastika Bookmark
An early 20th-century commercial novelty bookmark or miniature letter opener crafted from tortoiseshell and silver. The piece consists of a flat, pointed tortoiseshell blade topped with a rectangular sterling silver mounting. A small loop on the mounting holds a short silver chain with an attached swastika-shaped charm made of matching tortoiseshell. During the pre-1930s era, this symbol was a popular motif for good luck in Western commercial accessories and jewellery, predating its later political associations. The silver mounting is stamped with the text STERLING SILVER and PAT. 212101.
