Lot 588: A Collection of Traditional Indian Papier-Mache and Carved Decorative Elephant Figurines
A collection of decorative elephant figurines in various sizes, styles, and finishes. The group includes a large elephant carved from dark wood or resin, featuring white tusks and a hand-painted floral headpiece in red, green, and gold. The remainder of the collection consists of multiple lacquerware and papier-mache elephants in the traditional Kashmiri style. These are decorated with intricate, hand-painted floral and geometric motifs. Notable examples include a pair in navy blue with gold floral patterns, figurines in emerald green with black and gold-leaf patterns, and several in vibrant red and orange schemes. One taller, slender elephant is finished with a raised trunk in a red and black floral pattern. These items are characteristic of 20th-century decorative exports from India. No maker’s marks, factory stamps, or signatures are visible on the items.
