Lot 590: A Collection of Decorative Elephant Figurines in Various Materials and Styles
A collection of decorative elephant figurines featuring a diverse range of materials and artisanal techniques. The group includes a central ceramic figure of an elephant carrying a female rider playing a stringed instrument, possibly a biwa, decorated with polychrome glazes, raised enamel moriage, and gilt highlights in the style of Japanese export porcelain. Also featured are several wooden or composite elephants finished with intricate hand-painted floral and dot-work patterns characteristic of Indian Rajasthani folk art. Two black-toned figures are embellished with inset mirrored glass shards and chain detailing in the shisha work tradition. The collection is completed by various glazed porcelain elephants with patterned saddle cloths in multiple colours.
