Lot 599: A Trio of Indian Decorative Items Featuring Elephant Motifs
This lot consists of three decorative objects from India, each featuring elephant motifs and showcasing traditional artisanal techniques. The first item is a rectangular wooden box with a hinged lid. The exterior of the lid is decorated with a hand-painted miniature-style scene of a caparisoned ceremonial elephant against a landscape background. The interior of the box is lined with a red velvet-type fabric. The second item is a trinket box crafted from light-coloured carved soapstone, also known as steatite. The lid features a central relief carving of an elephant set within a panel of intricate pierced lattice, or jali work. The third item is a small elephant figurine carved from white marble. The body of the figurine is decorated with floral pietra dura style inlay, or parchin kari, using small sections of various coloured semi-precious stones or glass. No maker marks or signatures are present on the items beyond the white auction lot tag.
