Lot 669: 19th Century Mahogany Sarcophagus Shaped ciggeratee with Tunbridge Ware Style Inlay
A 19th-century mahogany ciggerate of sarcophagus form, featuring a waisted lid and base. The exterior is embellished with Tunbridge ware style geometric marquetry banding to the edges. The interior base is divided into two deep, curved compartments originally designed for tea canisters. The interior of the lid has been adapted with later fittings, including a tiered set of three grooved wooden racks, a metal label holder, and two metal spring clips, suggesting a secondary use for stationery or specialized storage. The box is constructed from mahogany with fruitwood inlays. No maker’s marks or stamps are visible on the piece.
