Lot 970: Late Victorian Carved Mahogany Breakfront Compactum Wardrobe
A large Victorian mahogany breakfront compactum wardrobe, dating to the late 19th century. The piece is constructed with mahogany veneers and solid mahogany elements, featuring pine as a secondary wood for the interior. The design follows a breakfront profile with a projecting central section. The two outer flanking doors are decorated with deeply recessed panels featuring ornate Renaissance Revival-style relief carvings, including central floral bosses and scrolling foliate motifs. The base section contains four drawers: two wide drawers in the bottom row and two smaller drawers positioned in the side sections above the plinth. All drawers are fitted with brass swan-neck handles and brass lock escutcheons. The interior is divided into three vertical compartments. The central section contains a raised wooden box or step feature, while the side compartments show evidence of fittings for shelving and hanging rails typical of a gentleman’s compactum.
