Lot 445: A Collection of Chinese Shiwan Style Glazed Ceramic Figures and a Cat Figurine
A collection of Chinese glazed stoneware figures in the traditional Shiwan or Shekwan style, commonly referred to as mudmen, together with a porcelain cat figurine. The group includes a pair of scholars depicted playing a board game, likely Go or Wei-Qi, wearing turquoise-blue and white robes. Also included is a seated fisherman in a navy robe positioned on a rock-work base and holding a bamboo rod, and a pair of elders seated together on a bench in green and yellow robes. A further figure depicts a standing elder in earth-toned robes on a rocky outcrop holding a bird. The figures are characterised by expressive facial features and thick, colourful lead-glazes. The porcelain cat figurine is finished in a white glaze with underglaze blue and pink floral and foliate decoration. No maker marks, stamps, or incised characters were observed on the pieces.
