Lot 658: British School, Late 17th Century, Portrait of a Lady
A half-length oil on canvas portrait of a lady in the late 17th-century style, presented within a feigned oval. The sitter is depicted wearing a burnt-orange dress with a white ruffled chemise and a dark wrap over her shoulder, her dark hair styled high in the contemporary fashion. The work demonstrates the characteristics of a provincial hand in the formal but simplified treatment of the features and drapery. The painting is housed in a substantial, heavily carved and gilded gesso frame featuring scrolling foliage and shell motifs. The reverse reveals an aged wooden stretcher with a central vertical support and multiple historical canvas patches. A stamped number 1327 is present on the left vertical stretcher bar. A small white label is attached to the reverse of the frame, and faint, illegible handwritten characters are visible on the top stretcher bar.
