Lot 1147: Two Antique and Vintage Wood Framed Sporting and Landscape Artworks
Two antique and vintage wood framed sporting and landscape artworks, comprising an original drawing and a reproduction print. The antique charcoal and pastel drawing on paper depicts a spaniel retrieving a game bird, executed with realistic detail to the animal’s coat and the bird’s plumage. It is housed in a dark ornate wooden frame with a gilded inner slip and protective glazing. The second work is a vintage landscape print titled Sheep on a Wooded Path, depicting a flock of sheep on a dirt track through a pine forest at sunset. This piece is presented in a simple wooden frame with a double card mount and glass. A small white adhesive label is affixed to the lower centre of the mount, printed with the title SHEEP ON A WOODED PATH in black block capitals. A white lot tag reading 1147 is affixed to the top edge of the drawing frame, and a similar tag reading 890 is attached to the bottom right of the landscape print.
Condition report:
The antique drawing shows significant condition issues including heavy foxing across the paper surface and substantial water staining with associated tide marks concentrated on the left-hand side and upper margin (photo 1). The paper shows general age-related discolouration. The ornate frame has minor surface abrasions and small losses to the finish. The landscape print appears in good order behind glass with no visible foxing or damp damage (photo 4). The simple wood frame has light scuffing and minor wear to the corners and edges.
