Lot 551: Two Antique Meiji Period Japanese Imari Porcelain Plates
Two antique Japanese porcelain plates from the Meiji period, decorated in the traditional Imari palette of underglaze blue, iron-red enamels, and gilding. The first plate is of circular form, featuring a central medallion with stylized floral motifs, surrounded by six alternating panels. Three panels depict courtly female figures in boats amidst blossoming cherry trees, while the remaining three show stylized ho-ho phoenix birds executed in vibrant red and gold. The reverse is finished with sparse, stylized underglaze blue linear motifs. The second plate features a lobed, scalloped rim and an intricate asymmetrical brocade design. This composition incorporates fans, bamboo, a crane, and butterflies amongst various geometric diaper fills, including the seigaiha wave pattern. The palette is enhanced with green, yellow, and turquoise enamels. The base of the lobed plate displays a printed underglaze blue square seal mark containing four stylized characters in a two-by-two grid within a double-line border, which is a version of the Fuku mark signifying good fortune.
