Lot 596: A Collection of Vintage Glazed Earthenware Novelty Cottage Ware Teapots
A collection of vintage novelty glazed earthenware cottage ware teapots, relief-moulded in the form of traditional British village buildings with hand-painted polychrome finishes. The group features four distinct architectural designs including three retail shops and a residential dwelling. One teapot is modelled as a greengrocer with a brown tiled roof and gabled dormer windows, bearing the word GREENGROCER in green lettering. Another depicts a fish and chips shop with a red tiled roof, featuring signage reading FISH & CHIPS on a pink banner and FRESH FISH DAILY on the shopfront. The third shop is a timber-framed baker with a dark brown textured roof and the word BAKER in raised relief. The final item represents a thatched cottage with a tan-coloured roof, a pink door, and a white picket fence with floral accents. Each teapot is constructed with an integrated lid forming part of the roofline, a curved handle, and a pouring spout. A white adhesive label reading 596 is present on the glass shelf near the fish and chips shop teapot, and a partial sticker reading 607 is visible in the upper corner of the first photograph. No maker’s marks or backstamps are visible on the exterior surfaces shown.
Condition report:
A visible chip is present on the front left corner of the baker teapot roofline (photo 2). The items exhibit general surface wear and shelf dust throughout (photo 1 and 2). No other cracks, major losses, or professional repairs are immediately apparent from the visual inspection.
