Lot 648: An Antique and Vintage Collection of Four Brass Candlesticks and Horse Brasses
An antique and vintage collection of four brass candlesticks and horse brasses, featuring domestic metalware from the late Victorian and early to mid-20th centuries. The collection contains two pairs of candlesticks: a pair of late Victorian ejector-style holders with hollow cylindrical stems and vertical slots for push-up mechanisms, and a second pair of candlesticks with fluted baluster-style stems on circular bases. These are accompanied by a group of cast brass horse brasses, showcasing traditional motifs such as the national emblems of the United Kingdom, including the rose, thistle, and shamrock, alongside geometric and crown designs. One candlestick base bears a small white rectangular adhesive label with the handwritten number ‘46671’ in black ink (photo 3). A separate white rectangular auction tag is present, reading ‘HCP Auctions South West’ and ‘Lot 648’ (photo 1). No other manufacturer marks or hallmarks are discernible on the items.
Condition report:
All items exhibit heavy surface tarnish and oxidation consistent with age and use (photo 1). Small patches of green verdigris are visible, particularly in the recesses of the horse brass designs and on the candlestick bases (photo 2). Residual white wax is present within the candle cups and around the ejector mechanisms (photo 3). The ejector knobs on the taller candlesticks are intact, though their functionality has not been tested against potential internal wax build-up or corrosion (photo 3). The turned surfaces of the candlesticks show fine scratches and minor pitting (photo 3). Some loss of detail is evident on the relief-cast horse brasses due to repeated polishing over time (photo 2).
