Lot 664: Mid-20th Century Patinated and Gilded Bronze Thai Deity Figure with Vintage Costume Jewellery
A mid-20th century patinated and gilded bronze Thai deity figure, accompanied by a collection of vintage costume jewellery and a pressed glass dish. The figure is cast in a dynamic classical pose, depicting a celestial dancer or deity, possibly representing the goddess Saraswati, holding a traditional stringed instrument or lute. The sculpture features a dark brown patina with bright applied gilding to the tiered mongkut crown, ornate necklaces, armlets, and the intricately detailed sampot skirt which is rendered with traditional scrolled patterns. The accompanying jewellery collection includes a pair of gold-toned stork embroidery scissors, a white enameled brooch depicting a Thai dancer in a classical pose, and a large rectangular Art Deco fashion brooch set with clear and sapphire-coloured paste stones. Also included are a silver-toned crescent moon brooch set with rhinestones and a black and white enameled mask ornament decorated with gold glitter. The items are presented in a rectangular clear pressed glass dish featuring a diamond and hobnail pattern. Visible labels include two white adhesive auction tags, one printed with Lot 694 and the other with Lot 664, both bearing the text hcpauctions.net. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible on the metal figure or the individual jewellery items.
Condition report:
The bronze figure is in overall good condition, showing minor surface wear and expected rubbing to the gilded highlights on prominent edges, particularly the crown and shoulders (photo 1). The vintage costume jewellery exhibits general wear consistent with age; there is light tarnishing to the metal surfaces and some dulling of the paste stones, notably on the Art Deco brooch (photo 2). The enameled pieces show no significant losses to the decorative finish (photo 3). The pressed glass dish is free from visible chips or cracks (photo 2).
