Lot 906: A Vintage Shabby Chic Distressed White Metal Birdcage Candle Holder / Lantern
A vintage shabby chic distressed white metal birdcage candle holder / lantern, constructed from a combination of wirework and stamped sheet metal bands. The piece features a domed top surmounted by a spherical finial and a large circular hanging ring. The cylindrical body tapers slightly towards the top and is embellished with openwork bands featuring scrollwork and fleur-de-lis motifs. The base is open, designed to be placed over a candle or light source. The entire structure is finished in a cream / off-white paint which has been heavily distressed, showing significant surface rust, oxidisation, and accumulated dirt throughout the metalwork. A white adhesive paper auction label is attached to the top ring reading HCP Auctions South West, Lot 996, and www.hcpauctions.co.uk. No maker’s marks or other labels are visible.
Condition report:
There is widespread surface rust and oxidisation throughout the metalwork (photo 1). The painted finish is heavily chipped, worn, and soiled, which is consistent with its distressed design and likely outdoor use (photo 1). Several of the vertical wires appear slightly bent or misaligned (photo 1). There is a general accumulation of dirt and grime across the surface.
