Lot 917: Antique Caucasian Tribal Hand-Knotted Wool Rug
An antique Caucasian tribal hand-knotted wool rug, featuring a saturated medium-blue field decorated with three prominent stepped geometric medallions. The medallions are rendered in a palette of madder red, orange, cream, and dark blue, each containing nested geometric forms. The surrounding blue field is populated with repeating small X-shaped geometric filler motifs in various colours. The rug is enclosed by a multi-layered border, with a primary cream-ground border displaying a repeating geometric star pattern, flanked by narrower guard stripes with reciprocal sawtooth and floral motifs. The construction consists of a hand-knotted wool pile on a wool foundation, with a relatively coarse tribal weave visible on the reverse.
