Lot 951: A Vintage Carved Mahogany Stained Telephone Bench / Gossip Chair
A vintage carved mahogany stained telephone bench / gossip chair, constructed from a dark-stained hardwood. The piece features a single-person seat with a raised, button-tufted backrest and a single open-slat armrest. Opposite the armrest is an integrated side table with a flat top and a single drawer fitted with a brass-effect knob. The unit is supported by four turned legs. The backrest is ornamented with carved scrollwork and a central motif. The seat and backrest are upholstered in a cream-coloured, textured fabric, with button-tufting to the backrest and piped detailing along the edges. A white rectangular adhesive sticker is present on the table surface, printed with the characters 9 5 1. No other maker’s marks, labels, or stamps are visible.

Condition report:
The mahogany-stained finish shows several visible surface scratches and scuffs, particularly to the flat tabletop and front edges (photo 1). There is minor wear to the finish on the legs and armrest (photo 1). The cream upholstery is in fair condition with light surface marks and signs of use consistent with age (photo 1).
