Lot 716: An Assortment of Watcombe Torquay Motto Ware Ceramics
An assortment of Watcombe Torquay earthenware ceramics produced in England. This group of decorative pottery is constructed from red earthenware, finished with a cream slip glaze and hand-painted decorations. The collection features a variety of forms including three jugs, a lidded preserve pot, two dishes, a pedestal bowl, and several small cups. The decorative scheme across the pieces includes hand-painted cottage and maritime scenes, typically framed by blue banded borders and accompanied by hand-written script. Specifically, two larger jugs and a lidded pot are inscribed LYNMOUTH with cottage scenes, while a smaller jug is inscribed TORQUAY with a sailing vessel. One rectangular pin dish features a hand-painted spider and is inscribed I’ll take care of the Pins. A square dish depicts a cottage and is inscribed Who burnt the Table cloth? and Lynton. A pedestal bowl with a scalloped rim features a figure and is inscribed Hello. Four small cups or egg cups are decorated with cottage motifs. An impressed mark on the unglazed red-brown base of the square dish reads WATCOMBE TORQUAY ENGLAND.
