Lot 872: The Royal Albert Viaduct at Saltash 1859, Wood Engraving
A mid-19th-century monochrome wood engraving depicting the Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash, Cornwall, crossing the River Tamar. The scene shows the railway viaduct with a steam locomotive traversing the spans, the town and waterfront buildings of Saltash across the water, and a foreground pastoral setting with cattle beside a post and rail fence. The lower margin bears the printed title inscription THE ROYAL ALBERT VIADUCT AT SALTASH 1859. Small printed characters are present in the lower left and lower right corners of the image border, though they are too small and indistinct to be legible as names. The work is printed on laid or wove paper with no visible plate mark, consistent with relief wood engraving, and is presented glazed in a moulded black frame with a gilt inner slip.
