A brass swing-cover safe keyhole escutcheon from the Late Victorian or Edwardian period, manufactured by Samuel Withers & Co. Ltd. of West Bromwich. The item consists of two primary components: a circular backplate featuring a central keyhole aperture flanked by two mounting holes, and a corresponding circular drop cover attached via a pivot pin at the top. The face of the swing cover is decorated with embossed lettering in a circular arrangement reading SAMUEL WITHERS & CO LTD WEST BROMWICH around a central horizontal word PATENTEES. The central text is flanked by two small decorative floral motifs. The brass retains a dark, aged patina with visible surface oxidation and verdigris, particularly to the recessed areas and the backplate. The reverse of the backplate shows significant iron-oxide staining, consistent with long-term attachment to an industrial safe door.
