A two-tone salt-glazed stoneware tavern or spirits flagon from the late Victorian period, originating from Falmouth, Cornwall. The vessel features a classic cylindrical form with a tapered shoulder, short neck, and a heavy, ringed rim. It is fitted with a single vertical ribbed strap handle attached from the neck to the shoulder. The upper portion, including the neck and handle, is finished in a dark honey-brown ferruginous slip, contrasting with the buff-coloured natural stoneware body below. The shoulder is decorated with black transfer-printed lettering in capitalised serif type which reads: LIDDICOAT & CODD, WINE, SPIRIT, & ALE MERCHANTS, FALMOUTH. The underside of the base is unglazed, displaying a rough, dark brown earthy texture and lacks any maker’s marks or capacity stamps.

Condition report:

The flagon shows a visible chip to the shoulder at the transition point between the brown slip and buff glaze (photo 1). Several small pitted marks and surface irregularities consistent with the kiln firing process are present across the body (photo 1). The rim exhibits surface wear and minor abrasions (photo 2). The unglazed base is heavily soiled with dark, encrusted residue and staining (photo 3). The transfer-printed text remains largely legible despite general age-related surface wear and light staining throughout.
