Lot 80: A Heavy-Duty Three-Strand Twisted Natural Fibre Rope
Not sold
A long coil of heavy-duty natural fibre rope, featuring a traditional three-strand twisted construction, likely composed of manila or hemp. One end of the rope is finished with a hand-worked back splice, designed to secure the strands and prevent fraying under tension. The rope is currently arranged in a series of loose loops and hitches. A translucent adhesive paper label is attached to the body of the rope, featuring handwritten text in purple ink reading ‘APPROX 20 FT’ and the number ‘6’. Above this, a smaller white rectangular adhesive label is present, printed with the text ‘HCP Auctions South West’, ‘Lot 080’, and the web address ‘www.hcpauctions.net’. The material displays a coarse texture and a natural tan colouration consistent with traditional cordage.
Condition report:
The rope shows signs of significant utilitarian use throughout. There is widespread surface fraying and \'hairiness\' to the fibres (photo 1). Notable dark staining and heavy discolouration are visible, particularly concentrated near the spliced end and at several points along the twisted strands (photo 2). The adhesive labels show creasing and surface wear consistent with handling.
