A large-format lithographic print after an original work by S. Francis Smitherman, depicting the steamship SS Great Britain arriving at South Street, New York. The scene captures the vessel on its maiden voyage on 10th August 1845, surrounded by numerous smaller sailing ships and a busy wharf populated with figures and cargo barrels under a bright sky. The print is signed in the plate at the lower left as Smitherman. Below the image, the margin includes printed text reading: Painted by S. Francis Smitherman, A.T.D., B.A., F.R.S.A. followed by a historical description of the event. The artwork is housed behind glass in a dark wood frame featuring a gilded inner bevel and a white mount.
