Lot 499: An Early 20th-Century Maritime Ship's Lantern by Eli Griffiths and Sons Ltd
A maritime or ship’s lantern manufactured by Eli Griffiths and Sons Ltd of Birmingham. The lantern is constructed from heavy-duty metal with a dark maroon painted finish. It features a cylindrical clear glass liner protected by a three-tiered wire cage and vertical struts. The upper cylindrical body bears a riveted rectangular maker’s plate embossed with the inscription ELI GRIFFITHS and SONS LTD / BRADFORD ST / BIRMINGHAM. The top of the lantern is fitted with a heavy-link iron suspension chain and a central carrying loop. This piece was originally designed as an oil-burning lamp but has been converted for electrical use, with a modern internal bulb socket visible through the glass.
