Lot 72: Two Vintage Shell-Mex BP and Pratts 2-Gallon Petrol Cans

Buyer's Premium:

Two vintage 2-gallon motor spirit or petrol cans, characteristic of the early 20th-century British automotive market. The first can is finished in dark green and features embossed text for Shell-Mex and B.P. Ltd. The branding includes SHELL-MEX in an arc above a shell-shaped logo containing a shield with the initials BP, and LTD at the base. This can retains its brass filler cap. The second can is a Pratts petrol can, also in dark green, featuring the brand name PRATTS embossed vertically in block capitals on the front face. The top shoulder of this can displays the stylized Pratt’s script logo. Both cans are constructed from painted steel and date from approximately the 1920s to 1930s, reflecting the period before roadside petrol pumps were universally available.
