Lot 990: A Vintage Mahogany Nest of Three Tables and Hand-Carved Hardwood Bowl
A vintage mahogany nest of three tables and hand-carved hardwood bowl. The nest comprises three graduated tables in a traditional English Regency revival design. Each table features a rectangular top with rounded bullnose edges, supported by twin turned spindle uprights at each end. These supports rest on bracket feet joined by a single horizontal stretcher. The wood is finished with a rich mahogany stain. There are no permanent maker’s marks visible; however, the top table bears a white rectangular adhesive label with the handwritten number 1088, and a printed auction lot label reading Lot 990 above HGP Auctions South West and the website hgpauctions.net. The accompanying circular bowl is carved from dark-stained hardwood in a folk art style. The exterior is decorated with high-relief carvings of stylized animals, including a stag or antelope, set against a textured cross-hatched ground.
Large-scale furniture items; exact dimensions are not provided.
Condition report:
The nest of tables shows signs of moderate use, including scattered surface scratches and minor nicks to the edges of the tops and legs (photo 1). The hand-carved bowl displays significant wear, with multiple chips and losses to the rim exposing the lighter natural wood beneath the dark stain (photo 2 and 3). The interior of the bowl shows heavy scratching, white surface residue, and a prominent black linear mark to the centre (photo 3).
