Lot 993: A Pair of Antique Cast Brass Kitchen Skimmers
A pair of antique cast brass kitchen skimmers, characteristic of 19th-century domestic culinary implements. Each piece consists of a broad, circular draining plate manufactured from sheet brass, featuring an array of hand-drilled perforations for straining liquids. The plates are attached to substantial cast-brass handles via two heavy rivets. The handles display decorative openwork casting with a series of teardrop and circular motifs, including a central trefoil cross, and terminate in an integral ring for wall mounting. The metal shows a warm, polished patina with visible evidence of historical handcrafting, including slight irregularities in the plate thickness and rim. A white rectangular adhesive label reading HCP Auctions South West Lot 993 www.hcpauctions.net is attached to the plate of one skimmer, and a further label reading Lot 992 is affixed to the handle of the other.
Large-scale domestic utensils; exact dimensions are not provided.
Condition report:
Both skimmers exhibit surface scratches, scuffs, and minor pitting consistent with age and domestic utility (photo 1). The circular plates show shallow dents and minor irregularities around the rims (photo 1). Scattered dark spots of oxidation and small patches of verdigris are visible, particularly around the rivets and within the handle recesses (photo 2). Adhesive residue is present from the lot stickers. Overall, the items remain in good antique condition.
