Lot 1081: An Antique Late Victorian Mahogany and Red Velvet Chaise Longue
An antique Late Victorian mahogany and red velvet chaise longue, upholstered in a deep red velvet fabric. The piece features a traditional scrolled headrest at one end and a backrest with a padded top rail supported by three carved mahogany splats. The substantial frame is raised on four turned mahogany legs, with the front two legs terminating in brass castors. The upholstery is finished with decorative piping along the lower edges and seams. A small white rectangular adhesive label is attached to the upholstery of the headrest bearing the printed characters 1081, serving as an auction inventory mark. No further manufacturer’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the exterior mahogany frame or supports.
Large-scale furniture items; exact dimensions are not provided.
Condition report:
The item is in poor cosmetic condition and requires significant restoration and full reupholstery. The red velvet upholstery is heavily soiled throughout with an accumulation of dust, lint, and hair (photo 1). A dark, circular stain is visible on the main seat area (photo 2). The fabric shows significant wear, thinning, and fraying, particularly along the lower piped edges and at the corners (photo 2). The mahogany frame and turned legs exhibit numerous surface scuffs, scratches, and minor indentations consistent with age and heavy use (photo 2).
