Lot 579: A Collection of West Country Salt-Glazed Stoneware Advertising Flagons and Foot Warmers
This collection of salt-glazed stoneware comprises several flagons and foot warmers primarily originating from the West Country region of England, dating to the early 20th century. The assortment includes a large handled flagon with a two-tone glaze, featuring a black printed mark for Pickup and Co. Botanical Brewers Bristol, dated 1929. A medium-sized flagon is impressed on the shoulder with marks for F. Shepperd Wine and Spirit Merchant of Ottery St Mary and includes a fitted cork stopper. The collection also features a cylindrical ceramic foot warmer printed with Hatcher and Sons Taunton, complete with its ceramic screw-top lid. A second, smaller foot warmer is present with a two-tone cream and brown glaze and a matching screw-top lid. Two additional handled flagons are included in the lot, both featuring standard two-tone salt glazes without visible maker’s marks. The items are constructed from heavy stoneware with traditional salt-glaze finishes in cream and dark brown tones.
Condition report:
The collection is in good vintage condition with signs of age and use. Visible wear includes minor surface staining, light scuffing, and small chips to the unglazed foot rims. Some pieces exhibit minor firing imperfections typical of early 20th-century stoneware production. The printed and impressed advertising marks remain clear and legible. Cork stoppers and ceramic screw lids are present where noted.
