Lot 581: Two Pieces of Mid-20th Century European Art Pottery comprising an Austrian Vase and a Rhodes Studio Pottery Bottle
This lot features two distinct pieces of European earthenware. The first is an Austrian art pottery vase of ovoid baluster form with a flared neck and wide rim. It is finished in a mustard-yellow ochre glaze featuring a central decorative band of incised sgraffito geometric motifs in a repeating pattern of overlapping ellipses, highlighted with a dark brown glaze. The unglazed base is impressed with the factory numbers 1245-25 and the word AUSTRIA. The second item is a Greek studio pottery bottle crafted from red earthenware terracotta. It has a cylindrical body and a narrow neck, decorated with white slip over a brown-stained ground. The decoration consists of a sgraffito lattice or net-like design with dot accents at the intersections, while the neck features concentric white rings. The base is hand-incised with the word Rhodes and the number 72.
Condition report:
The Austrian vase is in generally good condition but features a visible chip to the underside of the foot rim and minor surface scuffs consistent with age. The Greek bottle appears to be in good condition with only minor wear to the white slip decoration and no significant chips or cracks.
