Lot 620: Two Carved Wooden Decorative Items comprising an African Relief Panel and an Oceanic Style Mask
This lot comprises two carved wooden items produced for the decorative or export market in the mid-to-late 20th century. The first item is a vertical rectangular wall panel featuring five relief-carved human heads in profile, a style often associated with Makonde family tree carvings from East Africa. The heads are rendered in a dark-stained hardwood, possibly ebony, and are mounted to a lighter-coloured wooden backboard with visible vertical tool marks. The base of the panel features an incised inscription reading ISOME. The second item is an elongated openwork mask in the style of Oceanic art from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea. It features a stylised human face at the base surmounted by a carved crocodile or reptile figure extending upwards. Both items are carved from hardwood with a dark brown stain and polished finish.
Dimensions: Approximately 60cm – 80cm in length.
Condition report:
Both items are in generally good condition. The wall panel exhibits minor surface dust and light scuffing to the edges of the backboard consistent with display. The mask shows general surface wear and small white scuff marks at the bottom tip.
