Lot 729: Two Assorted Mahogany Dining Chairs in the Hepplewhite and Chippendale Styles
An assortment of two mahogany dining chairs, comprising one armchair and one side chair. The armchair is constructed in the Hepplewhite style, featuring a shield-back with a central pierced splat and out-swept arms on curved supports, standing on square tapered front legs. The side chair is constructed in the Chippendale style, featuring a shaped top rail over a pierced vase-shaped splat with a central lozenge motif, set on front cabriole legs terminating in pad feet with splayed rear legs. Both chairs are assembled using traditional mortise and tenon joinery. The chairs are fitted with matching modern drop-in seats upholstered in a cream-coloured fabric featuring a repeated foliate pattern of leaves in shades of brown and green. These items are 20th-century reproductions of 18th-century designs. One chair bears a white adhesive auction lot sticker with the printed characters 729 and the other bears a similar sticker with the characters 32.
Condition report:
Both items show signs of heavy use and age-related wear. There is significant scuffing, scratching, and loss of finish to the wooden frames, particularly on the legs and back uprights. The modern upholstery appears to be in clean, usable condition.
