Lot 768: An Edwardian oak coal purdonium
An Edwardian oak coal purdonium or cabinet of two-part construction. The upper section features a rectangular top with dentil-style moulding above a fall-front door, which opens to reveal an interior fitted with a single fixed shelf. The door is fitted with a decorative cast metal drop handle. The lower section is separated by a wider mid-tier shelf with matching dentil moulding and contains a tilt-out bin housing a removable dark-toned metal liner with twin wire loop handles. The base of the cabinet is finished with egg-and-dart style carved moulding. The piece is constructed from oak with visible medullary ray grain on the interior door panel. No maker’s marks or labels are visible.
Condition report:
The cabinet shows surface wear, scratches, and staining to the wooden surfaces consistent with age and use. The metal liner shows signs of oxidation and use typical of a coal storage unit.
