Lot 938: Early 20th-century canvas and leather-bound domed-top steamer trunk
An early 20th-century domed-top travel trunk, of a style frequently associated with Army and Navy C.L.S. campaign and steamer furniture. The trunk is constructed with a dark canvas-covered body, reinforced with leather-bound edges and corners secured by metal rivets. The front features a central rectangular metal lock plate and was originally fitted with two leather securing straps with metal buckles. A single leather carry handle is present on the side. The domed lid is prominently stenciled with the initials C.C. in white paint, likely representing a former owner. The construction suggests a wooden frame beneath the canvas and leather exterior.

The item is in poor to fair antique condition and shows signs of heavy use and long-term storage. The exterior surface has significant scuffing, abrasions, and losses to the outer coating. There is an extensive presence of white powdery residue, consistent with mould or mildew, across much of the exterior surface. Leather components are dry, brittle, and cracked, with one front strap being partially lost. The metal hardware shows surface oxidation and pitting. The interior has not been inspected.
