Lot 558: A Collection of Vintage Estate Smoking Pipes including a Carved Meerschaum Example
A collection of smoking pipes comprising several briar wood examples and a hand-carved meerschaum pipe. The briar pipes feature rusticated finishes and white metal bands at the shanks. The meerschaum pipe bowl is intricately carved in the form of a bearded man’s head, possibly depicting a sailor or explorer, and is fitted with a curved, amber-toned mouthpiece. The interiors and rims of the bowls show characteristic darkening and carbon build-up from previous use. No maker’s marks or stamps are clearly legible in the provided images.
Condition report:
All pipes are in a used condition. The bowl interiors exhibit heavy charring and residue consistent with regular smoking. The briar pipes show minor surface wear and oxidation to the metal bands. The meerschaum pipe displays light surface staining and minor abrasions. Mouthpieces across the collection show varying degrees of tooth wear, surface scratches, and minor oxidation.
