Lot 22: A Large 19th Century Lithographed Tin Vase-Form Canister
A highly collectible tall, decorative lithographed tinplate canister of tapering vase form, resting on a flared circular foot and capped with a domed lid featuring a spherical brass-toned finial. The exterior is finished with a cobalt blue ground decorated with elaborate gilded-style foliate and acanthus scrollwork. The body features two large oval vignettes containing lithographic reproductions after the Dutch Golden Age painter Johannes Vermeer: The Music Lesson (also known as A Lady at the Virginals with a Gentleman) and The Milkmaid. The interior and the underside of the lid have a typical golden-yellow lacquered finish. Small, illegible characters are visible at the lower edges of the pictorial vignettes, though the base is unmarked.
