Lot 875: Two Victorian Ash and Elm Windsor Chairs
This lot consists of two complementary wooden chairs in the British vernacular style, comprising one high-back armchair and one side chair. The armchair is constructed with a tall back featuring five vertical splats and a shaped top rail with turned finials. It includes scrolling arms on turned supports and a deeply shaped solid elm seat. The side chair has a curved, overhanging top rail over seven vertical slats and a matching solid elm seat. Both items are raised on turned legs. The construction follows traditional Windsor methods with components joined directly into the thick, single-piece elm seats. The seats display characteristic wide grain patterns, while the frames and legs are likely crafted from secondary hardwoods such as ash or beech. No maker’s marks or stamps are present.
