Lot 1098: An Antique Rustic Pine Plank-built Storage Chest
An antique rustic pine plank-built storage chest from the late 19th / early 20th century. The chest is constructed from wide pine planks, with a lid comprising three longitudinal boards and a front face of two horizontal boards, joined with utilitarian nailed and pegged construction. The exterior surface retains a heavy, aged patina with numerous abrasions, circular stains, and gouges consistent with use as a shipping crate or storage trunk. An inset lock mechanism is present, evidenced by a keyhole on the front face, although no key is provided. A white adhesive lot label reading Lot 1098 is fixed to the top left of the lid, and a small white sticker printed with the numeral 1 is located on the lower right front edge. The interior is lined with multiple layers of decorative paper, including a vintage mid-century Christmas-themed wallpaper depicting fir trees decorated with gift boxes. Modern ephemera remains within the chest, including a Twickenham rugby ticket for a Powergen Cup Final, a Liverpool FC ticket, and a childs photographic contact sheet. The interior lid shows significant staining and remnants of earlier paper linings.

Condition report:
The chest is in used, rustic condition. The exterior pine surface displays a heavy patina with numerous scratches, abrasions, and deep gouges (photo 1). There is visible wood splintering and material loss along the bottom edges of the front and side panels (photo 1). The interior paper lining is heavily distressed, showing peeling, tears, and staining (photo 2). The interior lid exhibits heavy water staining and remains of earlier linings (photo 2). The structural integrity appears sound, though the lock mechanism has not been tested.
