Lot 1155: Two Antique and Vintage Thomas Shotter Boys and C.L.A. Framed Artworks (Signed)
Two antique and vintage framed artworks, comprising a topographical print of Hyde Park Corner by Thomas Shotter Boys and a coastal landscape painting by C.L.A. The print is a hand-tinted nineteenth-century lithograph on paper from the Original Views of London as It Is series, depicting a bustling street scene with Decimus Burton’s triumphal arch and Apsley House. The composition includes various horse-drawn carriages and figures in period dress, set within a wide, textured beige mount and a gilded stepped wooden frame. The painting is executed in oil or gouache on canvas in a naive style, depicting gaff-rigged sailboats by a wooden jetty and red-roofed buildings under a cloudy sky. It is housed in a dark-stained wood frame with a narrow gilded inner slip. The verso of the painting reveals a wooden stretcher frame with corner wedges and visible foxing to the reverse of the canvas. A printed inscription reading HYDE PARK CORNER is visible at the lower right of the print. The painting features characters that appear to be B 23 at the upper right and is initialled C.L.A. to the lower right. White adhesive lot stickers reading 46737 and 467 are present on the frames.
Condition report:
The topographical print mount shows visible foxing and discolouration throughout (photo 1). The gilded frame for the print has minor scuffing and small losses to the finish (photo 1). The coastal painting shows visible foxing and spotting to the reverse of the canvas cloth (photo 5). The wooden frame of the painting shows light surface wear and minor scuffing to the gilded slip (photo 1).
