Lot 594: Two Antique Ceramic Cups comprising a Minton Ironstone Teacup and a Kutani Porcelain Teabowl
Two antique ceramic cups, comprising an English ironstone teacup and a Japanese porcelain teabowl. The ironstone teacup, produced by Minton and Boyle during the William IV to early Victorian period, features a wide, scalloped rim and a decorative scroll handle. It is decorated in the Imari palette in a pattern identified as Amherst Japan, showing underglaze cobalt blue floral transfer printing enhanced with hand-painted iron-red enamels and gilt details. The base is marked with a printed blue scroll cartouche containing the text AMHERST JAPAN above a hand-painted red pattern number 824. The porcelain teabowl is of handleless, flared form and is decorated in the Kutani fashion with hand-painted overglaze enamels depicting figures in a garden landscape. The base bears a square red four-character mark reading 加藤日造, which identifies the maker as Kato Nichizo.
Condition report:
The ironstone teacup shows significant kiln staining and surface dirt to the footrim (photo 4), with moderate rubbing to the gilt highlights on the rim and handle (photo 2) and fine surface crazing throughout. The porcelain teabowl has a visible hairline crack extending from the base towards the rim (photo 3). There is heavy staining and residue from old adhesive to the footrim (photo 4), alongside general wear to the enamel decoration and gilt borders (photo 3).
