Lot 679: A Vintage Hand-Carved Hardwood Balinese Barong Mask
A vintage hand-carved hardwood Balinese Barong mask, representing the protective spirit Barong Ket in Hindu-Balinese mythology. The mask features a central face with large bulging eyes with dark-stained pupils, a prominent rounded snout, and an open mouth displaying exposed fangs. This central figure is embellished with a stylized decorative crown and is framed by a broad, multi-layered mane of flame-like and foliate carvings. The piece is fashioned from a dense tropical hardwood, finished with a warm brown polish that highlights the grain. The reverse is hollowed out showing rough-hewn carving marks from the manufacturing process and is fitted with a modern black synthetic braided cord for wall mounting. This item is intended for decorative display as it lacks apertures for a wearer’s eyes. A white rectangular adhesive paper label is present to one side, printed with HCP Auctions South West, Lot 679 and a website address.
Condition report:
The mask is in good overall condition with no visible structural cracks or losses. There are light surface scuffs and minor wear to the polished finish consistent with age and handling (photo 1). A light accumulation of dust is visible within the deep recesses of the carving (photo 1). The rough texture to the reverse is a result of the carving process rather than damage (photo 2).
