Lot 890: A William IV Flame Mahogany Pedestal Desk and Matching Stool
A William IV flame mahogany pedestal desk and matching stool, featuring a central frieze drawer with a curved, recessed profile. The desk is constructed with rich flame mahogany veneers, displaying prominent grain patterns on the pedestal panels and drawer front. Each pedestal is embellished with gadrooned rope-twist carved borders at the upper and lower edges, and the entire piece is raised on short, turned bun feet. The top surface is finished with mahogany veneers rather than a leather lining. Accompanying the desk is a small rectangular stool with dark brown button-tufted upholstery and turned mahogany legs. A printed paper inventory list is visible on the top surface displaying numerical sequences from 1001 to 1014; this is contemporary auction documentation and not a permanent manufacturer mark. No drawer pulls or knobs are visible on the drawer fronts, which appear to have flush-mounted or missing hardware.

Condition report:
The mahogany veneer on the front panel of the right-hand pedestal exhibits significant vertical stress cracks and checking (photo 1). Minor chips and lifting of the veneer are visible along the base mouldings of both pedestals (photo 1). The top surface and side panels show general signs of age-related wear, including surface scratches, scuffs, and areas of fading to the finish (photo 1). The turned bun feet display typical scuffing and minor indentations consistent with use (photo 1). The stool upholstery appears to be in good, clean condition (photo 1).
