Lot 619: A Late Victorian Brass Bullseye Dark Lantern with Barton's Patent Burner
Sold for: £14
A late Victorian brass bullseye dark lantern of cylindrical form, constructed from sheet brass with a domed, tiered heat vent to the top. The body features a sliding outer sleeve designed to expose or conceal the light source, a characteristic mechanism of the ‘dark lantern’ type. A large circular convex bullseye glass lens is seated within the frame. The interior retains its original oil lamp assembly, comprising a brass reservoir and a burner. The burner is stamped with an anchor device flanked by the letters ‘B’ and ‘B’, above the legible text ‘BARTONS PATENT’. The rear of the lantern is fitted with a wire belt clip assembly. The brass displays an aged surface with significant areas of natural tarnish and green verdigris, particularly concentrated around the soldered seams and the domed top.
